“Thank you.” Viola smiled as she gave the baby another hug. “Thank you so much.” The baby gave out a little coo, reaching up her hand toward the seamstress’s beaming face. Viola gazed down at the child. “Everything’s going to be just fine now, Goldie, you’ll see. I’ll take the best care of you.” She looked back up at Mack. “And I will. I promise you that.”

“I’m sure you will,” Mack replied, taking care to make his voice as reassuring as possible. “You get that little one on home and take care. I’ll stop by later, once I’ve had a chance to work out what ought to happen next.”
